The Story of our Lady of Guadalupe
St. Juan Diego, a humble Aztec peasant, saw the Blessed Virgin Mary on the Hill of Tepeyac near present-day Mexico City on December 9, 1531, the feast of the Immaculate Conception at the time.
After a request by the bishop to prove her identity, Our Lady asked Juan Diego to gather the roses which he found growing on the hill, which were neither native to the area nor in season, and take them to the bishop.
Juan Diego did so and placed the roses in his tilma (or cloak). Upon opening the tilma to reveal the miraculous roses to the bishop, there was something even more miraculous present—an image of the Virgin Mary dressed as a pregnant Aztec princess. The various design elements on the tilma read like a codex to the Aztecs, revealing to them the truth of the Catholic faith preached by the missionary priests.
Millions quickly converted to the Catholic Church as a result. This apparition and image is venerated under the title of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the first Marian apparition in the New World, and the only one where Our Lady produced an image of herself.
The perfectly preserved tilma is venerated at her basilica and shrine in Mexico City. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the Americas, the New Evangelization, and unborn children. Her feast day is December 12th.
Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
San Juan Diego, un humilde campesino azteca, vio a la Santísima Virgen María en el Cerro del Tepeyac cerca de la actual Ciudad de México el 9 de diciembre de 1531, la fiesta de la Inmaculada Concepción en ese momento.
Después de una solicitud del obispo para probar su identidad, Nuestra Señora le pidió a Juan Diego que recogiera las rosas que encontró creciendo en el cerro, que no eran nativas de la zona ni en temporada, y se las llevó al obispo.
Juan Diego así lo hizo y colocó las rosas en su tilma (o manto). Al abrir la tilma para revelar las rosas milagrosas al obispo, había algo aún más milagroso presente : una imagen de la Virgen María vestida como una princesa azteca embarazada. Los diversos elementos de diseño de la tilma se leen como un códice a los aztecas, revelándoles la verdad de la fe católica predicada por los sacerdotes misioneros.
Como resultado, millones se convirtieron rápidamente a la Iglesia Católica. Esta aparición e imagen es venerada bajo el título de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, la primera aparición mariana en el Nuevo Mundo, y la única donde Nuestra Señora produjo una imagen de sí misma.
La tilma perfectamente conservada se venera en su basílica y santuario en la Ciudad de México. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe es la patrona de las Américas, la Nueva Evangelización y los niños por nacer. Su fiesta es el 12 de diciembre.

Our Holy Mary, Mother of the true God, appeared to a very humble man, Juan Diego on December 9, the day when her Immaculate Conception was remembered and celebrated in 1531.
Through God's grace and mercy, Juan Diego knew that she was the Virgin Mary and had chosen him for a very special mission: to have a holy temple built for Jesus Christ to be loved and worshipped as Lord of Heaven and Earth. She wanted the people to know and experience God's LOVE for them. She wanted them to know that she would be there to pray for their healing, health and protection.
With God's help, Juan Diego obediently followed Our Lady of Guadalupe's direction. With the miraculous signs of blooming roses from the desert, the healing of his uncle, and her image on Juan Diego's cloak, his Bishop recognized our Holy Mary, Mother of God and fulfilled her request. He called her Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Word about the appearance of Our Lady and the miracles spread and over 8 million Aztecs were converted and received Jesus as their Lord and Savior from their sins and the practice of human sacrifice.
The appearance of Our Lady of Guadalupe is recognized in the Sacred Tradition of the Church.In 1999, Pope John Paul II declared December 12 as the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 2002 he canonized Juan Diego as a Saint of the Roman Catholic Church.
In this season of Advent Preparation, reflect on the appearance of Holy Mary, Mother of God as Our Lady of Guadalupe to humble Juan Diego. Ponder her request and his courageous actions in obedience.

Nuestra Santísima María, Madre del Dios verdadero, se apareció a un hombre muy humilde, Juan Diego, el 9 de diciembre, día en que se recordaba y celebraba su Inmaculada Concepción en 1531.
Por la gracia y la misericordia de Dios, Juan Diego sabía que ella era la Virgen María y lo había elegido para una misión muy especial: hacer construir un templo santo para que Jesucristo fuera amado y adorado como Señor del Cielo y de la Tierra. Quería que la gente conociera y experimentara el AMOR de Dios por ellos. Quería que supieran que ella estaría allí para orar por su sanidad, salud y protección.
Con la ayuda de Dios, Juan Diego siguió obedientemente la dirección de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Con las señales milagrosas del florecimiento de las rosas del desierto, la curación de su tío y su imagen en el manto de Juan Diego, su Obispo reconoció a nuestra Santa María, Madre de Dios, y cumplió su pedido. La llamó Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe.
Se corrió la voz sobre la aparición de Nuestra Señora y los milagros y más de 8 millones de aztecas se convirtieron y recibieron a Jesús como su Señor y Salvador de sus pecados y la práctica del sacrificio humano.
La aparición de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe está reconocida en la Sagrada Tradición de la Iglesia. En 1999, el Papa Juan Pablo II declaró el 12 de diciembre como la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. En 2002 canonizó a Juan Diego como Santo de la Iglesia Católica Romana.
