Who did you tell the story to? (How did they respond?)
YOUR STORY THIS WEEK ABOUT JESUS IS:
Luke 7:36-50 A Woman Pours Perfume on Jesus
36 One of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him. So he went to the Pharisee’s house. He took his place at the table. 37 There was a woman in that town who had lived a sinful life. She learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house. So she came there with a special jar of perfume. 38 She stood behind Jesus and cried at his feet. And she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair. She kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 The Pharisee who had invited Jesus saw this. He said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him. He would know what kind of woman she is. She is a sinner!”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain lender. One owed him 500 silver coins. The other owed him 50 silver coins. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back. So he let them go without paying. Which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who owed the most money.”
“You are right,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman. He said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water to wash my feet. But she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss. But this woman has not stopped kissing my feet since I came in. 46 You did not put any olive oil on my head. But she has poured this perfume on my feet. 47 So I tell you this. Her many sins have been forgiven. She has shown that she understands this by her great acts of love. But whoever has been forgiven only a little loves only a little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49 The other guests began to talk about this among themselves. They said, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.”
READ and RETELL THE STORY TOGETHER Read through the story two times. Have each person retell the story in his/her own words. (DO NOT SKIP THIS STEP!! If we can’t tell it, we still don’t “know” it

FAMILY CATECHESIS DISCOVERY BIBLE QUESTIONS
EXAMPLE of FAMILY DISCUSSION
Here is an example of notes taken from a Family Discussion:
1. What are we thankful for?
I am grateful that when I asked God to provide for a special need and he did!
I am grateful for LIFE with God!
I am grateful that God is always with us!
2 What are challenges you are facing?
I would like some help with learning math.
I would like to be more comfortable sharing in groups
We would like our children to truly know that they are loved by God and share this love with others.
I would like God to be #1 in my life.
3. How can we help/pray for you?
Prayers for:
God’s grace to learn and grow with math tutoring help
Remembering who we are as God’s beloved, giving us faith and confidence that He is always with us
Simply loving our children and noticing how God is transforming them and praise God for that
Asking God to keep us from temptations that distract us from choosing a friendship with Him first over everything else
4. What do we learn about God from this passage?
Jesus accepted the invitation of the religious leader to come and have dinner at his house.
Jesus received the woman who had lived a sinful life with compassion and kindness, even though the owner of the house disapproved of her and her kissing and pouring perfume on Jesus’ feet with loving affection.
Jesus knew what was on the mind and in the heart of the religious leader and told a story to teach a lesson.
The lender in Jesus’ story is God who has the POWER to forgive sins.
5. What do we learn about people? Ourselves?
The woman who was known for her many sins believed in Jesus and openly showed her love for him, much more than the religious leader
Jesus said that her sins were forgiven and her FAITH in God helped her to have an even more loving relationship with God. He gave her the gift of God’s PEACE.
The religious leader disapproved of the woman’s behavior and thought that if Jesus were really speaking as God’s messenger, he wouldn’t have anything to do with this woman who was known to be a sinner
The religious leader gave the right answer about the story Jesus told….that the one with the greater debt forgiven by God would have even more love to share. He didn’t see how this story was connected to the woman he was condemning in his mind and heart.
There were other guests watching all of this wondering who Jesus really was and why he said he could forgive sins.
6. What do we feel led by the Lord to apply/obey this week? I WILL……
I WILL TRUST in God’s forgiveness and remember to thank Him from my heart for his forgiveness whenever I confess my sin to Him and turn back to Him
7. Who are you going tell this story to this week?
I will share this story with a friend who needs to know and believe that God wants to forgive and heal us so we can love and worship him with all our hearts.
OUR FAMILY PLEDGE
We will continue to meet weekly as a FAMILY GROUP and complete the stories of HOPE about Jesus.
