Lesson 4: The CHURCH, Age of the Holy Spirit
RECALLING
Activity: The Holy Spirit guides EVERY member of the Church to continue the work of Christ. Choose THREE terms from this list and write out what the term means in your JOURNALS.
bishops: Jesus left his Apostles to carry on his mission to make God known to all people.
The Apostles passed this mission on to the Pope (the Bishop of Rome) and the
bishops to lead the Church on earth.
priests: men who are chosen and consecrated through the Sacrament of Holy Orders to be
co-workers with bishops.
deacons: men chosen and consecrated in the Sacrament of Holy Orders to assist bishops
and priests, especially in the ministry of mercy and charity.
laity or lay people: all the members of the Church who have not been ordained, who
active help to carry out God’s mission of LOVE on earth.
religious brothers: those who are called to a consecrated life to grow in holiness and
serve the church.
PENTECOST: the fiftieth day after Easter when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles and
disciples as promised by Jesu Christ; We celebrate Pentecost as the
birthday of the Church.
MARKS of the CHURCH: are the four signs or essential qualities of the Church founded by Jesus: ONE, HOLY, CATHOLIC and APOSTOLIC
one: The Church is one Body of Christ (as the Head)
holy : The Church is holy as Christ lives in each believer on the
road to God’s holiness guided by the Holy Spirit
catholic: The Church is catholic meaning universal or spread
throughout the whole world.
apostolic: The Church shares the teaching of the first Apostles to
help everyone know and receive Jesus as Lord and
Savior.

ACTIVITY: Answer the questions below.
What do you mean when you profess: “I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church?
Sample Answer: I believe that God intended for all of us to be ONE, united Body of believers with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as our head.
I believe that as baptized followers of Christ, we have the Holy Spirit in us guiding us toward God’s HOLY life in in His image.
I believe that God intended for God’s WORD to be the catholic or universal foundation of TRUTH and LOVE in all believers throughout the world.
I believe that the Church is called by God to be apostolic to follow the example of His disciples (apostles) in sharing the Good News with others of how Jesus came to save us all and bring us back to a healthy, loving relationship with God.
In what ways do you cooperate with the Holy Spirit to build the Body of Christ especially in your family?
Sample answers:
I surrender my heart and life to God every day.
I ask for the Holy Spirit’s guidance to help me do what God wants me to do at the beginning of each day.
I spend time meditating on God’s Word and in prayer every day.

We are disciples of Christ. Read Matthew 28:16-20. Explain how you live Jesus’ message.
16 The eleven disciples went to the hill in Galilee where Jesus had told them to go.
17 When they saw him, they worshipped him, even though some of them doubted.
18 Jesus drew near and said to them, “I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth.
19 Go then, to all peoples everywhere and make them my disciples: baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
20 and teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And I will be with you always to the end of the age.
Sample Answer:
First of all, I ask Jesus to help me learn, obey, and live out what His Word teaches us, especially when we attend Mass each week.
Then I ask Jesus to help me share what He wants me to share with others about who he is and how to live in his Kingdom now and forever.
I trust that he will tell me what to say and show me what to do to help others come to know, love, and serve God with all their hearts.

What do these Scripture passages tell you about the power of the Holy Spirit?
ACTS 2:1-11: This passage describes how the Holy Spirit came as Jesus had promised to the Apostles and Mary and all those who believed in the Resurrection of Jesus.. People from all over were there in Jerusalem. By the power of the Holy Spirit, they were able to hear and understand each other and wonderful things God had done.
1 Corinthians 12:3-7, 12-13: This passage tells about how the Holy Spirit gives special gifts to each of us for the good of all as we serve Jesus as our Risen Lord. Some of these special gifts include: messages of Wisdom, faith, and the power to heal. We are baptized into one BODY where Christ is the head. We are all given special gifts to share with others.
John 20: 19-23: On the evening of Jesus’ resurrection, he appeared to his disciples and showed them his hands and feed. The disciples were filled with joy at seeing the Lord. Jesus blessed them with his PEACE and breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit.” He told them that the Holy Spirit would give them the power to willingly forgive others who had sinned against them.

Ejemplo de respuesta: Creo que Dios quiso que todos fuéramos UNO, Cuerpo unido de creyentes con nuestro Señor y Salvador Jesucristo como nuestra cabeza.
Yo creo que como seguidores bautizados de Cristo, tenemos el Espíritu Santo en nosotros guiándonos hacia la vida SANTA de Dios en Su imagen.
Creo que Dios quiso que la PALABRA de Dios fuera el fundamento católico o universal de la VERDAD y el AMOR en todos los creyentes en todo el mundo.

16 Los once discípulos fueron al monte de Galilea donde Jesús les había dicho que fueran.
17 Cuando lo vieron, lo adoraron, aunque algunos de ellos dudaban.

Respuesta ejemplo:
En primer lugar, le pido a Jesús que me ayude a aprender, obedecer y vivir lo que Su Palabra nos enseña, especialmente cuando asistimos a Misa cada semana.
Luego le pido a Jesús que me ayude a compartir lo que Él quiere que comparta con otros acerca de quién es Él y cómo vivir en su Reino ahora y para siempre.
Confío en que él me dirá qué decir y me mostrará qué hacer para ayudar a otros a conocer, amar y servir a Dios con todo su corazón.

¿Qué te dicen estos pasajes de las Escrituras acerca del poder del Espíritu Santo?
HECHOS 2:1-11: Este pasaje describe cómo vino el Espíritu Santo como Jesús lo había prometido a los Apóstoles ya María ya todos los que creían en la Resurrección de Jesús. Gente de todas partes estaba allí en Jerusalén. Por el poder del Espíritu Santo, pudieron escucharse y entenderse y las cosas maravillosas que Dios había hecho.
1 Corintios 12:3-7, 12-13: Este pasaje habla de cómo el Espíritu Santo nos da dones especiales a cada uno de nosotros para el bien de todos mientras servimos a Jesús como nuestro Señor Resucitado.
